Our spanking new eco-friendly wood-fired hot tub, made from sustainably sourced European larch, is now installed in Mountain Maison’s top floor garden. It took Alvaro and some strong friends several hours on a miserable wet day to roll it up the hill and manoeuvre it into place (massive thanks to Olivier, Matt, Jeremy, Jerry, Eric and the Polaris!). Luckily the German manufacturers did a good job – it held together despite the battering and doesn’t leak.
The hot tub, 2 metres in diameter and seating up to 8, is now ready and waiting for our first group in December. Due to French pool regulations, unfortunately only guests staying sole occupancy in Mountain Maison or the Penthouse can rent the hot tub. This allows us to use less harmful and polluting cleaning agents in the water.
We know hot tubs aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, not least because of concerns about hygiene and the environmental cost, so we’ve also decided rather than putting our prices up in Mountain Maison and the Penthouse, we’ll just charge groups wanting to rent the tub a supplement. This goes towards the costs and time involved in looking after the tub, but also towards donations to water and re-forestation charities – thereby helping to further minimise the environmental impact of the hot tub. To keep the extra charges down, we’re also giving guests the option of either heating up the hot tub themselves, or paying one of our team to stay and look after the wood stove for them.
